I guess it’s kind of a letdown in how it squandered some of its greater strengths of presenting a loving couple navigating through an eventful academy life. But I can’t fault the show for that if its main intention is to sell volumes of the manga. I’d say that it’s more of a 6.5/10 experience than a 4 or 5, and that alone says a lot about the show’s positive merits. To me, it was worthwhile to see how fun Alto was as a lead, how attractive Vermeil was, and the refreshing amount of romantic tension the couple had as they became closer and closer.
Vermeil in Gold wasn’t a perfect adaptation of its manga source because it chose the Platinum Square terrorists attacking the Bronze Exams as its concluding arc. The producers sacrificed much narrative development to arrive at Vermeil’s origin story before the end of the first cour. That decision speaks to a production committee that wasn’t confident in getting more than twelve episodes to arrive at a satisfying conclusion. When Alto and Vermeil returned from Fatima’s memory world, the anime season needed to end Iolite’s fight quickly. I could see more time spent with Iolite and with Fatima to explain things. But if there’s no guarantee that Vermeil in Gold has more anime episodes to tell its story, it has to wrap things up in a hopeful bow.
Well, they could’ve made almost half the entire final episode about Alto and Vermeil making out. It feels like a long troll to us wonder if it will ever turn to hentai. Sorry folks, we all know better. It’s not. Oh well, keep those love making coming. Because theoretically if this powers them up little by little, they’re going to need all that power to eventually have their rematch with Iolite and the rest of his merry gang. Yeah. They’re going to need it. So keep on kissing and caressing in the name of powering up and maintaining mana. Oh right. Adding a lot of touch of true love in it goes a long way. I’ll bet by that time that final battle for the world’s fate comes, they’ll be so overpowered and overflowing with love! LOVE WILL SAVE THE DAY! Then I can quip, IT’S OVER 9000!!!!!! YEAH!
